Facebook Privacy - with pictures

Andy Arnold - Monday, November 22, 2010
Have you checked your Facebook page today? Have you looked up an old friend? Have you found yourself wasting time looking at old pictures? I know I end up doing all of these things on a pretty regular basis. Sometimes I wonder what other folks can see. I hear on the news about Facebook privacy policies changing and doing this or that. I wrote about this back in June, but things change so fast, I figured it was time to revisit.

I decided that I don’t really care if people that I don’t know well don’t find me. So I recently went into my Facebook privacy setting - at www.facebook.com/privacy - and set them like this.

Everything is set to Friends Only, with the exception of the Check In feature. I have this set to Only Me, so that I’m the only one that can check myself into places on Facebook. I’m not currently doing this, so it probably doesn’t matter.

If you’d like to change how your Sharing on Facebook setting are configured, click on Customize Settings near the bottom of the screen and change the settings to the way that you want them to be. I have most things set to Friends Only, with the exception of Website, which Everyone can see, and Wall Posts by friends, which I allow Friends of Friends to see.

If you want to change you can check you into Facebook Places, click the Edit Settings box on this screen. Once you’ve got things the way you like them, click Back to Privacy at the top of the screen. Now, under Connecting on Facebook, click the View Settings link.

Adjust these settings to fit your desired privacy settings. I have mine set this way.
Click Back to Privacy to go back to the previous screen when you’re done. Finally, check the applications that have access to your account. If you’re like me, you add applications all the time, but never bother to remove them after you stop using them. Under Applications and Website, click the Edit Your Settings link. You’ll get to this screen:

Click on Edit Settings next to Applications you use and remove the ones that you aren’t using anymore. You can also monkey with other various privacy settings from this screen. I have removed all but the most basic Info accessible through your friends in that section, because I prefer to be Facebook Friends with people that I actually know and to share information myself, rather than having an application do it for me. Of course, there have been times that I’ve been pretty proud of my Bejeweled Blitz score!
