Cultural Intelligence: The Answer to Understanding and Loving Your Neighbor
Faculty: Dr. Dee Stokes, Overseer/Lead Pastor of T.E.A.M. Church
Course Description: Cultural Intelligence (CQ) is the ability to interact and work effectively in intercultural settings or contexts. These may include family structures, organizations, congregations, regions of the country, ethnicities, etc. Many times, church leaders do not understand the culture(s) within their own church, much less the surrounding community. This course will help you and your church gain a knowledge of 1) what Cultural Intelligence is, 2) the 10 unique Cultural Values seen everywhere, and 3) the first day will begin with a dose of unconscious bias in an effort to get you excited about understanding and loving your neighbor at a greater level and to make you feel compelled to want more. We will also utilize our time role-playing and engaging in case studies to better understand these concepts and to help you apply them to your work in the kingdom!

Belonging, Engaging, and Celebrating
Faculty: Kendall Mathiason & Doug Johnson, Youth Ministry Professionals near Seattle
Course Description: Do you wonder how you can transform strangers into belonging members in your ministry? Engaging and participating in a variety of activities is a way to increase a sense of belonging, but getting there is often hard. Finding a place of belonging is a start, but next steps are needed to create a true culture of belonging and recognition. How does your congregation, or yourself, appreciate and celebrate? What does appreciation and celebrating look like for you? How can we turn our Appreciation into Celebration? This Intensive Care Course will focus on discussions and activities about how your communities can work towards a community of belonging, engagement, and celebration. During this course, you will learn through interactive activities and collaborative conversations about how to foster a long-lasting culture of inclusion, acceptance, honesty, appreciation, and celebration for all generations—from the church walls and beyond!
Kendyll Mathiason has worked with youth of all ages for over a decade, currently serving as the Director of Children, Youth, and Family Ministries in Washington State. She has loved every moment of her experience in ministry- be them profound, silly, challenging, embarrassing, or downright baffling. She sees it as God’s gift to be part of people’s stories, just as the children, staff, and volunteers she has and does work with are part of hers. When not working, she surrounds herself with her handsome, hairy husband, two kooky kiddos, pets, glitter, and as many board games and adventures as possible.
Doug Johnson has been in children, youth, and family ministry for nearly 15 years, serving congregations from Minnesota, to Florida, to Washington with a passion for building relationships with families, other congregations, and the wider community. Doug currently serves two congregations, just outside of Seattle. When not at church, Doug enjoys spending time going on adventures with his wonderful wife (hiking, camping, or just walking our dogs), playing ultimate Frisbee, playing games, and cooking.
